Crazy Birds

Crazy Birds

This quilt was made using a pattern called Fancy Feathers by Lunch Box Quilts. It provided applique designs for my embroidery sewing machine. It took me "only" 7 years after I bought the pattern and the fabric to finally get around to working on and finishing the quilt. I guess you could also call it my COVID quilt. It was fun to decide on the fabric to be used for each of these birds, but not so much fun to make 52 of the same swirls used for fillers.

Tipsy Little Houses

Tipsy Little Houses

I made this one for my guild's Quilting for Hospice group. This one is for a camp for children who have lost someone important in their lives. The quilt is on their bed when they arrive and they keep it. Thanks to Melinda Fulkerson for teaching this quilt at "Las Vegas Strippers" workshop and to Robin Gallagher for teaching the binding method. The great thing about this quilt is that it can be made entirely from your small scraps.

Baby Quilts for Max and Jun

Blue quilt and Green Quilt

These quilts were made for my grandnephew and grandniece. Maxwell Lion was born on my birthday in May, 2014 and Juniper Tiger in January, 2017. They are really small in this picture, but there is a lion in the bottom left of Max's quilt and a tiger sleeping on the moon in the bottom left of Jun's.

Olivia's Quilt

Black and white pinwheels

I made this quilt for my grandaughter, Olivia, who choose the colors. I started it at a quilting workshop in Las Vegas, called the "Las Vegas Strippers". My good friend from Atlanta and her sister were teachers at this workshop. This quilt is a double size and is the largest I have ever made.

Christmas Quilt

Christmas tree quilt with appliqued light border

I made this quilt for a contest at Judy's Fabric Center in Scott's Valley. Everyone in the contest had to incorporate 1/4 yard of the same fabric in their project. The projects could be anything; they didn't have to be a quilt. The fabric is an olive-green with shots of gold in it. In my quilt, the fabric is used for some of the trees and some of the green triangles in the border. There is even a light bulb that is cut from the gold part of the fabric. The projects were displayed in the shop during July and customers voted for their favorites.

I didn't win!

Convergence Quilt

Convergence Quilt

I made the field of this quilt at a class at Judy's Fabric Center in Scotts Valley. The class was on a type of quilt called a "convergence" quilt, which is a piecing technique designed by Ricky Tims. They feature two or more designs that are cut into strips and them merged together. In this case four fabrics were used. You can learn more about Ricky at www.rickytims.com .

Another attribute of Ricky's quilts is that the design sometimes extends out into the border. I created the border after the class, attempting to bring the peacock that was part of the strips out into the border. I'm often asked how I decided to make the diagonal strips in the border. That came about as a purely practical matter. I had run out of larger pieces of fabric and didn't want to make a trip to Scotts Valley to buy more fabric.
